Poanes hobomok occurs in North America east of the Rocky Mountains, mainly east and south of the Great Lakes. It is found in woodland opening, riverine habitats, along wetland edges, etc. Wingspan 25-43 mm. The upperside is yellow-orange with a dark margin in the male; darker and duller in the female. A wide yellow or orange band on the underside of hindwing. Adults drink nectar from a variety of flowers, e.g., Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca), Common Blackberry (Rubus allegheniensis), etc. The larvae feed on various grasses (including Panicum and Poa spp.). One brood a year, April into early July.
